Our Careteam

Sam Spangler

Practice Manager

Sam Spangler joined the practice full time after nearly two decades working in the education, business, and health insurance fields. He holds two Master’s degrees and is a life-long University of Georgia football fan. He shares his wife’s (Dr. Spangler’s) passion for animals and has been the proud pet dad of many fur babies through the years. Bulldogs hold a special place in his heart and he has been privileged to rescue 3 of them through the years. His current bulldog, Fidget, can usually be found by his side in his truck or at the clinic. Sam brings not only a passion for pets and pet care, but a dedication to strengthening client relations and continuing the great work that Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic has been known for. Sam manages the practice with the philosophy that “Our clients and patients are our first priority!”

Barb Gee

Licensed Veterinary Technician & Office Manager

For Barb, working in veterinary medicine is much more than a job, or even a career. She’s felt pulled toward animal care ever since she can remember—serving as a veterinary professional is truly her calling! Barb is a Licensed Veterinary Technician with the Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic family.

A Roanoke native, Barb began her veterinary adventure in 1988, when she signed on as a Veterinary Assistant and Kennel Technician at a local animal hospital. She then moved to another clinic, working her way up from a kennel position to the senior Veterinary Technician, and obtained her Veterinary Technician’s license at the same time. Barb remained with the hospital until 2010; after taking a few years off from the animal-care world and managing a fitness facility, she signed on with a clinic in Vinton, Virginia before joining the Old Dominion Veterinary Clinic team in March of 2016.

As a Tech, Barb enjoys dentistry work and the instant gratification it can bring. She also likes cytology. Most of all, she loves to interact directly with clients on a daily basis and do whatever she can to brighten up a pet owner’s day.

Barb’s interests outside of veterinary medicine include reading, swimming (she’s even medaled in the breaststroke and freestyle as a member of the local swim organization!), and enjoying time with her family. She and her husband, Colin, have two grown sons and a pair of wonderful grandchildren. Barb also shares her life with two dogs—Roxie the Australian Shepherd and a terrier mix named Pepper—as well as three fish and six quirky cats: Ben, Beckett, Grace, MJ, Stitch, and Max.

Tim

Receptionist, Veterinary Assitant

Tim’s childhood Pekingese, Choo-Choo, was his best friend in the world while growing up. Thanks to her penchant for chasing cars, she injured herself on more than one occasion—the local veterinarian helped heal Choo-Choo after every incident, and at the same time inspired something in Tim that hasn’t quit to this day. Now, he’s proud to help animals as a veterinary professional himself!

Tim was born in Bristol, Tennessee but grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate studies, and secured his first position at a local veterinary clinic shortly after graduation. Next, he attended Columbia University to obtain his Master’s degree in Human Nutrition. Tim then went on to earn an additional Master’s in Public Health from Yale School of Public Health. After living and working in Honolulu, Hawaii, for a few years after graduate school, Tim returned to the Washington D.C. and Virginia areas and has been here ever since.

Having worked with Dr. Spangler and Dr. Downes at another hospital earlier in 2017, Tim jumped at the chance to work with them again—he was hired on as a front-desk receptionist and Veterinary Assistant in the fall of 2017. Tim’s favorite part of his job is hearing stories from clients about their lives and their pet’s fun stories as well. He especially loves working alongside a compassionate team of wonderful human beings who are animal lovers just like himself.

In his time away from work, Tim likes traveling, reading, dabbling in photography, enjoying film and theatre, watching great television, and spending time with his own pets at home. He has a beautiful and intelligent Pekingese named Coco and is surrounded by his feline rescues which include a lovable grey cat who goes by Smokey; Romeo the orange tabby; and an orange tabby named Diego.
